On the other side...

This is the story of my times and trials while living and teaching "on the other side" of the world: Taipei City, Taiwan. "True Life: The blog of an ESL teacher. You think you know but you have no idea."

More pictures and few updates...

So clearly above are the pictures from the Kindergarten Halloween Show. The day before the show, which strangely was celebrated a week before Halloween, Louise and I were informed that we would be MCs of the event. This meant entertaining not only 300 Kindy kids but also their parents, the school principal and about 100 video cameras. Luckily I was able to throw together an acceptable pirate costume on short notice and loads of corny dialogue to perform with Louise. I am now more convinced than ever of the similarities between being a performer/celebrity and a teacher...even on a day to day basis in the classroom. It's something about trying to grab everyone's attention while flailing your body about, creating an alternate personality, feigning importance, and then dealing with throngs of children screaming your name and risking life and limb to get just one little grab on your skirt as you exit the classroom.
Later that same day I was brought back to reality when I went to an anniversary cocktail "Glamour" party for an office interior design company with the girls. The event was held on the 80-somethingth floor of Taipei 101. It was quite bizarre to mingle with adults and make conversation about topics like business cards or rather my lack thereof, instead of that one kid who sits in the front row and can't seem to stop picking his nose during class. It was refreshing to some degree, albeit a bit stiff. The fantastic champagne and view were the highlights to be sure.. although with every sip I think I took another foot back from the floor to ceiling windows.

Lastly, we had an interesting turn of events in our apartment. Just 2 days prior to its actually occurence , we were informed that a new teacher would be joining our staff AND apartment to replace the girl that had up and left without notice last month. We all dreamed up possible scenerios about what this mystery person would be like, and luckily were pleasantly with the arrival of Paul, a super nice guy from California. It's been really fun to be able to show someone new around and I think it's making me more motivated to get out and about in the city.

Oooo and one more thing- Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans! It's nothing new to not be able to go home for the holiday, but usually I have my 4 Montreal girls to spend all day in the kitchen with and all night stuffing our faces. Luckily my good friend Mia is throwing her own Thanksiving this Friday so I'm going to get some turkey after all.... even if broccoli and zucchini casserole are missing...
